Team Iraq - Hope Tour

INTRODUCTION
Since 2006 FC Unity has been actively involved in promoting community cohesion in the UK through a series of football related initiatives, bringing minority communities together with mainstream British society.

So far we have held over 25 events in various parts of London and Birmingham, as well as our ongoing programme in Iraq. We have worked with a number of organisations, foundations and grass-root community groups, as well as schools, universities, football clubs and local authorities.

Since 2007 FC Unity has held an annual community tournament, organised by a diverse group of young leaders, in London to remember the victims of the 7-7 terrorist atrocities. So far we have had over 100 teams representing over 60 nationalities, with extensive media coverage in the UK and the Middle East.

2009 saw the programme expand with workshops and debates on multi-cultural societies, citizenship and leadership. As a vital addition, following media workshops, our Young Leaders produced a video about the 3rd annual UNITY Cup London and the work they have done to make it a success.

THE UNITY PROGRAMME

FC Unity is now creating an annual sporting, development and educational programme based in London that brings together different communities in London, mobilising the communities and empowering young people from diverse areas to achieve a positive change within their areas. It will bring private, public and volunteer sectors together with communities to create a youth-led model.

The programme is centred around 2 annual community-corporate football tournaments, two community-corporate leagues, a series of lectures, workshops and debates. The primary aim is bringing different communities to the table, getting them to work together, facilitate debate and discussions and try and find common solutions to local problems.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

Participation – Engagement – Development - Employment

  • Creating youth-led high-profile, long-term sustainable programmes and events that provide a platform for all communities to interact through football and football-related initiatives.

  • Engaging and providing development opportunities to a number of young leaders from various communities and empowering them to take the lead through our programmes and create a peer mentoring system.

  • Employing young people trained and developed by FC Unity and their partners.

  • Finding practical solutions through facilitating democratic debate, discussions and research conducted through FC Unity Young Leaders in their own communities and working together with each community.
