The Story
During the first day of the Hope Tour launch in Najaf we drove to Al Mishrak district and saw two teams of teenagers playing football in the midday sun, it was over 50C yet they put full effort into the game, stopping momentarily to greet the strangers who turned up to watch them. The Al Mishrak district is an impoverished part of Najaf and most of these youngsters had jobs to support their families.
As they finished their game, we got boxes out of our van and asked them to line up so we can give them England football shirts. Needles to say that after the first few players took ownership of their shirts friendly chaos erupted. Luckily we managed to give every player a jersey and a football before saying good bye to them.
I can still remember the smiles on their faces as we drove away.
